It’s hard not to love Kansas-born mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, especially when she keeps turning out one stunning album and transcendent performance after another…the latest jewel in her crown in Drama Queens, an album where she explores lesser-known Baroque arias which depict a parade of royal personages in varying states of emotional turbulence.
Favorites such as Handel’s ‘Piangero la sorte mia’ from Cleopatra mix with newly-unearthed gems such as Porta’s heartbreaking ‘madre diletta, abbracciami’ and Orlandini’s searing ‘Col versar, barbaro, il sangue,’ making for a program as fresh as it is powerful.
